Dr Stephen Merron is a senior consultant anaesthetist in neurological anaesthesia at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. His main clinical interests are anaesthesia for neurovascular and neuro-oncology surgery and radiological neuroanaesthesia. Stephen is a well-respected and high achieving anaesthetist and former head of anaesthesia, theatres, critical care and pain management at UHNM.

Stephen’s original medical qualification is from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1997. He became a consultant at UHNM in 2008 having completed his postgraduate training in the West Midlands Scheme. A graduate of the Stoke School of Anaesthesia, Stephen also undertook his advanced training in neurological anaesthesia at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK.

Stephen has been engaged in hyperacute stroke since 2009 when the fledgling thrombectomy service was first introduced to UHNM. Over the years Stephen has gained a vast amount of experience in the management of both thrombotic and haemorrhagic stroke and is an expert in the acute anaesthetic and critical care management of these conditions.

Stephen is keen educator and trainer in anaesthesia and resuscitation. He continues to be actively involved in medical leadership and service development and is passionate about the use of technological innovation to improve clinical outcomes, whilst minimising risk and the effects of human factors.
