Dr Indira Natarajan is currently the Clinical director of Neurosciences at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust and a Honorary Senior Lecturer at Keele University in the UK. He is also the Clinical Director for Stroke for the West Midlands Strategic Health Network.

Following his qualification in 1992, he did his postgraduate training in Medicine in South Manchester, North Wales and Exeter. His Specialist Training was in the West Midlands during which time he developed a special interest in Stroke Medicine. He completed Fellowship in Stroke Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital London. He worked as a Specialist Registrar for 3 years at the University Hospital North Midlands and having enjoyed every bit of his time there, he returned back to the Potteries as a Consultant Stroke Physician.

Since his appointment at UHNM, Dr Natarajan has led the implementation of Regional Thrombolysis rota across Shropshire and Staffordshire. He has also led the implementation of Neuro-interventional pathway for Hyper-acute strokes in the West Midlands region.

His clinical work includes TIA/stroke clinics, a specialist service for people with cardioembolic strokes or conditions that may cause it, out-of-hours thrombolysis on call work, and emergency stroke outreach services to the hospital’s emergency department and also to support the local hospitals needing expert stroke advice across the region.

Dr Natarajan has been Championing Stroke Prevention secondary to atrial fibrillation to the wider community with key aim of preventing disabling strokes. This unique nurse-led service received the Innovation in Patient Care Award from the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr Natarajan currently serves as a member of the Executive Committee and the Clinical Standards Committee of the British Association of Stroke Physicians.
